Maxine's story

Maxine was a longtime resident at Ross Mill Farm who, due to her size and health issues, had difficulty finding a home. You see, Maxine was very large for a potbelly pig and had some neurological issues. She was prone to seizures in times of stress.

When we met her in 2015, we really hit it off and decided to adopt her. We rented a minivan and drove her straight through from Pennsylvania to Florida -- 17 hours! Maxine didn't make a peep or even pee/poop the whole trip! She became an "office pig" -- we set up a big bed for her and she'd happily sleep the day away, while spending some time outside to graze & such.

In 2018, she started acting rather strangely. She became sort of reclusive and we knew something wasn't right. We took her to the University of Florida and it turns out she had very aggressive cancer. She'd probably had it for some time, but because pigs are prey animals, they tend to hide it when they don't feel well. So, by the time we found the problem, it was too late. We sent her to heaven that day.

Anyone who's had pets knows that over the course of your life, while you love all your animals, certain ones are just special. Maxine was one of those. We got just under 3 years with her but that short time made a huge impact on us. We spread some of her ashes at Ross Mill Farm and the rest sit in an urn in a prestigious spot in our house.
